New Website

I started this new website today. It has been about 20 years since I maintained a personal website. We'll see if I keep up with this one or not.

I'm using the Hugo static site generator and a theme called Clarity. It has a bit of a learning curve, so what I've got running is pretty basic.

But basic is also a feature. I have maintained a couple of business websites over the years and they were heavy on databases and active scripting. I didn't like how complicated and data-heavy they were for what was ostensibly a very simple site. But I also didn't like having to write every bit of HTML from scratch on my previous personal website every time I wanted to add a post. Hugo may front-load some complexity but once I get everything set up and figured out, it should be pretty easy to maintain - and without PHP and a database and hundreds of kB of mystery meat with every page load. And no cookies!

I'm using NearlyFreeSpeech.net as my hosting provider. They only charge for actual bandwidth used and actual storage used, from a prepaid dollars bucket. Seems like the ideal use case for a static site.
